Papoose debuted as a rapper in 1998 on Kool G Rap’s Roots of Evil album. In 2004, he released “Thug Connection,” a song that included the b-side “Alphabetical Slaughter.” He was given an eight-album deal by Select Records, which he turned down. Papoose began recording and selling mixtapes independently after doing time at Rikers Island, one of which he delivered to DJ Kay Slay outside the offices of New York’s Hot 97, who invited Papoose onto his radio program.

Kay Slay signed him to his Street sweepers brand after hearing his performance of “Alphabetical Slaughter.” Papoose continued to put out mixtapes at a rapid pace, releasing more than a dozen between 2004 and 2006, and in 2005 he received the Justo Mixtape Award for Best Underground Artist. He got involved with Busta Rhymes’ Flipmode Squad during this time, appearing on the remix of “Touch It.”

Papoose stated on August 24, 2006, that he had signed a $1.5 million deal with Jive Records and was working on his debut album, The Nacirema Dream. Kay Slay and Papoose announced their departure from Jive in September 2007, saying they “nearly (became) victims of A&R hell.” Papoose continues to produce mixtapes on his own between 2007 and 2012, releasing nine total. Papoose claimed in his 2009 mixtape 21 Gun Salute that despite not releasing an album, he was able to keep the $1.5 million from Jive.

Papoose signed a deal with Fontana Distribution to release his debut album, The Nacirema Dream, after seven years of development and 27 mixtapes. The album was released on March 26, 2013, to generally good reviews and debuted at number 97 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The track “On Top of My Game,” with Mavado, came before it.

Alongside the support of Top Dawg Entertainment, Papoose “cracked” Hot 97’s Summer Jam on June 2, 2013, performing The Nacirema Dream’s third single, “Get At Me,” with Ron Browz. Papoose dissed Kendrick Lamar in a remix of “Control” after he claimed the title of “King of New York.” During the BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher, Lamar called Papoose’s remark “comical” and fired back at him. Papoose responded on October 4, 2013, by claiming that Lamar would never be able to “shine my shoes, poetically” and that he intended to release another diss track on a future Mixtape. Papoose released Hoodie Season, his first mixtape since his first album, on November 4, 2013. Before releasing his second studio album, You Can’t Stop Destiny, on July 17, 2015, he released two more mixtapes, Hoodie Season 2 and Cigar Society.

He also appeared in the specials Remy & Papoose: A Merry Mackie Holiday, Dirty Little Secrets, and The Love Edition, as well as the spin-off show Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies.
