After meeting the boys at a local mall in 1990, he founded the teen combo Kris Kross (Chris Kelly and Chris Smith). Krossed Out, the group’s debut album, was released in 1992 and became multi-platinum thanks to the hits “Jump” and “Warm It Up,” written and produced by Dupri.

In 1993, he founded his record label, So So Def. Shortly after, he spotted female R&B trio Xscape at an Atlanta festival and signed them to the label. Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, their debut album produced solely by Dupri, went platinum thanks to the hits “Understanding,” “Love on My Mind,” “Tonight,” and “Just Kickin’ It,” the latter of which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. During the same year, he met Da Brat through Kris Kross on Yo! MTV Raps signed her to his label So So Def Recordings and released her platinum debut Funkdafied (1994).

In 1993, So So Def Recordings and Columbia Records formed a distribution agreement. On the number one smash single “Always Be My Baby” in 1995, he worked for the first time with Mariah Carey. On the track “Not Tonight,” he contributed to Lil’ Kim’s 1996 album Hard Core.

Dupri co-wrote and produced several tracks for Usher’s second album, My Way, in 1997. “You Make Me Wanna,” the lead single, debuted at number one on the Rhythmic Top 40 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. The follow-up single, “Nice & Slow,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts, while the last single, “My Way,” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The Recording Industry Association of America has certified all three singles as Platinum (RIAA). Monica, a featured guest on the record, would subsequently become a Dupri protégé. Her second album, The Boy Is Mine, was released in July of that year. Dupri produced the album’s first song, “The First Night,” which reached number one on the Billboard charts in the United States, earning the album triple platinum certification and worldwide acclaim.

Jermaine Dupri was a part of Destiny’s Child’s eponymous debut album’s release in 1998. Dupri refocused his attention on his music career, which was boosted by the success of the lead singles “Sweetheart” featuring Mariah Carey (US#126), “The Party Continues” featuring Da Brat and Usher (US#26), and “Money Ain’t a Thang” featuring Jay-Z (US#52) from his debut studio album Life in 1472. In October 2001, he released his sophomore studio album, Instructions. He took over Carey’s talent manager from Randy Jackson on October 7, 2013. He later severed ways with Carey in August 2014. Yet, the two continue to work together professionally since he was a producer on all her albums since Daydream (1995).

The Rap Game, a reality television series developed by Dupri and Queen Latifah, premiered in 2015. On New Year’s Day 2016, Lifetime premiered the eight-episode series. It followed five young musicians, ages 11 to 16, as they immersed themselves in the Atlanta hip-hop scene, hoping to become a rap superstar.

Usher, Ludacris, Da Brat, T.I., and Silentó were among the guests who provided the competitor’s guidance on what it takes to succeed in the industry.
